IELTS for GDC registration: the 7.0 rule, and why OET is not on the list

The GDC names IELTS Academic and does not list OET. That single omission has cost candidates months.

The English language requirement is where a surprising number of dental registration applications stall — not because candidates cannot meet it, but because they sat the wrong test.

What the GDC asks for

For the ORE, the GDC names IELTS Academic, at 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in each of the four skills. Evidence normally has to be under two years old at the point you rely on it.

That second condition matters more than it looks. A score you earned three years ago is not evidence any more, however good it was.

The OET trap

If you have already sat OET, do not simply submit it and hope. Ask the GDC directly, in writing, before you rely on it.

The non-test routes

A test is not the only way to satisfy the requirement. The GDC recognises alternatives, broadly:

  • A dental qualification that was taught and examined entirely in English.
  • Recent practice in a majority-English-speaking country.

These are assessed case by case rather than granted automatically, so confirm your own position with the GDC rather than reasoning from someone else’s outcome on a forum.

The LDS is different, and less clear

RCS England does not publish a required IELTS or TOEFL score on its LDS pages, and it is not in the published regulations either. There are exemptions for EEA nationals, those with indefinite leave to remain, and UK graduates.

Do not assume the LDS requirement matches the GDC’s 7.0. Ask the exams office before you book a test — sitting for a score you did not need, or a score that turns out to be short, both cost months.

Practical order of operations

  1. Decide your route — the registration overview compares them.
  2. Confirm the requirement in writing with the GDC or RCS England for your own circumstances.
  3. Only then book a test, allowing for the possibility of a resit.
  4. Check the two-year age limit will still be satisfied when you apply, not just when you sit.
